Veneers
What Veneers Can and Can’t Do
A veneer is a thin shell of porcelain bonded to the front of a tooth. It covers what’s underneath, so it can change a tooth’s colour, shape and length in a way whitening or bonding can’t.
Veneers work well for:
- Teeth that are chipped, worn or uneven at the edges
- Deep staining that whitening won’t shift
- Small gaps and teeth that look too short or narrow
- Replacing old veneers that have chipped, stained or don’t look right
They aren’t the answer for crooked teeth (Invisalign usually is), or for teeth that need strengthening (that’s a crown). We’ll tell you if something else would suit you better.

Porcelain or composite?
- Porcelain veneers are made in a dental lab. They resist staining well and last the longest: a 2021 review of clinical studies found about 95% were still in place after 10 years. They usually need a thin layer of enamel removed.
- Composite is tooth-coloured resin shaped directly onto the tooth in one visit. Little or no enamel is removed, and it’s cheaper, but it stains and chips more easily and needs refreshing every few years. See our composite bonding page.

What to expect
At your consultation, we look at your teeth, gums and bite, take photos and a 3D scan, and talk about the look you want. Any gum disease or decay is treated first.
At the preparation visit, we numb the teeth, remove a thin layer of enamel, scan them, and fit temporary veneers. About two weeks later, we try in your porcelain veneers, check the colour and shape with you, and bond them in place.
Because veneers can’t be undone, we’ll give you a written plan and price and encourage you to take time to think it over before booking.

Your questions answered
Dental veneers are thin coverings placed on the front surface of teeth to improve appearance. They are often used to enhance colour, shape, and overall smile balance.
Porcelain veneers are custom-made in a laboratory and tend to be more durable and stain-resistant. Composite veneers are sculpted directly onto the teeth and may be a more conservative option in some cases.
Porcelain veneers are one of the longer-lasting cosmetic treatments. A 2021 review of clinical studies found that around 95% were still in place after 10 years. Looking after your gums, wearing a night guard if you grind, and coming to regular check-ups all help.
Veneers are considered a long-term treatment because a small amount of enamel is usually removed. This means the procedure is not reversible.
Porcelain veneers at Harwood start from £1,050 per tooth, or £945 on our membership plan. Most people have between two and eight. You’ll get a written quote after your consultation, and monthly payments are available.
Porcelain veneers usually mean removing a thin layer of enamel from the front of the tooth, often less than a millimetre. That can’t be reversed. We keep it to the minimum needed, and where composite or no-prep options will do the job, we’ll say so.
Yes, veneers can close small gaps and improve symmetry. For larger spacing issues, orthodontic treatment may be recommended instead.
Yes, natural appearance is a priority. We carefully select shade, translucency, and shape to blend with your features.
Porcelain veneers are resistant to staining from coffee, tea, and wine. Maintaining good oral hygiene helps preserve their appearance.
Veneers can improve the appearance of minor alignment issues. More significant crowding may require orthodontic treatment.
Yes, we can discuss veneers before and after examples during your consultation. This helps you understand what may be achievable.
The first step is a consultation to assess your smile and discuss your goals. We’ll then outline whether veneers are the right option for you.
