If you have looked into teeth straightening, you have almost certainly come across Invisalign. What you might not know is that there is another respected clear aligner system called Spark, and at Harwood Dental Care we offer both.
That matters, because it means our recommendation is based entirely on what suits your teeth — not on which brand we happen to stock.
How Clear Aligners Work
Both systems work on the same principle. A series of custom-made, transparent, removable trays are worn over the teeth, each one slightly different from the last, gradually guiding your teeth into the planned position. You move to a new tray every one to two weeks and attend occasional check-up appointments so we can monitor progress.
Before treatment begins, digital planning software maps out the full course of movement and generates a simulation of your expected result. You can see where your teeth are likely to end up before you commit to anything.
What is Different Between Spark and Invisalign?
The two systems are more alike than they are different. For most patients the experience of wearing them is similar. But there are a few genuine distinctions.
Material. Invisalign uses a proprietary material called SmartTrack. Spark uses TruGEN, a newer material that Spark’s manufacturer says offers improved clarity and resistance to staining compared to older aligner materials. In practice, both are transparent enough that most people will not notice you are wearing them during everyday conversation.
Clarity over time. Spark trays tend to stay slightly clearer with extended wear. Because aligners are replaced on a regular cycle this rarely becomes a visible issue, but it is a real material difference.
Attachments. Both systems use small tooth-coloured dots, called attachments, bonded temporarily to some teeth. They give the aligner something to push against for more precise movements. The shape and placement of attachments differs slightly between the two systems, and the right design depends on the specific movements your teeth need to make.
Track record. Invisalign has been available since 1999 and has treated millions of patients. The clinical evidence behind it is extensive. Spark is newer but is backed by Ormco, a well-established orthodontic company, and produces comparable results for the cases it is designed to treat.
Why Have I Heard of Invisalign But not Spark?
Invisalign has a considerably larger marketing presence. That does not make it the better treatment in every case. Spark is a high-quality, clinically proven system. We offer it because it is genuinely the better fit for some patients, not as a budget alternative.
How Do We Decide Which to Recommend?
The decision is based on your teeth and what they need to do during treatment. We will assess your bite, alignment, and specific goals at your consultation and discuss which system we think is likely to give you the best outcome. If both are clinically appropriate, we are happy to talk through the options with you.
What Clear Aligners Can and Cannot Treat
Both Spark and Invisalign are effective for crowding, spacing, mild to moderate overbites, underbites, and crossbites. Neither is appropriate for severe skeletal issues, which would require specialist orthodontic treatment or surgery. The consultation is where we assess whether your case falls within what clear aligners can realistically achieve.
How Long Does Treatment Take?
It varies considerably. Mild corrections can be complete in around six months. More involved cases typically take 12 to 18 months. We will give you a realistic estimate at your consultation based on your own teeth.
What is Involved in Wearing Clear Aligners Day to Day?
The aligners need to be worn for 20 to 22 hours a day. You remove them to eat, drink anything other than water, and to brush and floss. Compliance is important. The more consistently you wear them, the more predictable and on-schedule your result will be.
What Happens When Treatment Is Finished?
You will need to wear a retainer to hold your result. This is standard after any orthodontic treatment, because teeth have a natural tendency to drift back without support. We will talk you through what the retention stage involves at the right point in your treatment.
