For many people, the consultation is the part they feel most unsure about. What happens? How long does it take? Will they know straight away whether implants are possible? It can feel like a big step just to book an appointment.
The honest answer is that the consultation is the most important part of the whole process, and it is considerably more straightforward than most patients expect. Here is exactly what happens when you come to see us about dental implants at Harwood Dental Care in Bolton.
Why the Consultation Matters
Dental implants are not a one-size-fits-all treatment. The consultation is where we find out whether implants are the right option for you, which type would suit your situation, and what a realistic treatment plan would look like. It is not a sales pitch. It is a clinical assessment, and it gives us the information we need to give you an honest answer.
Our oral surgeon Jonathan Stevens leads implant assessments at the practice, and he will talk you through everything before any decisions are made.
What We Look At
We examine several things during an implant assessment. The condition of your gums is important, because healthy gum tissue is a requirement for implant treatment. We look at your remaining teeth, your bite, and the overall health of your mouth. We also assess the bone in the area where an implant would be placed.
Why is Bone so Important for Dental Implants?
An implant works by fusing with the bone in your jaw over several months, a process called osseointegration. There needs to be enough bone present, in the right quality and quantity, to hold the implant securely. When a tooth is lost, the bone that used to support it is no longer stimulated and gradually begins to shrink. The longer a tooth has been missing, the more likely it is that some bone has been lost in that area. This is about how long the gap has been there, not about your age.
If bone is limited, that is not necessarily the end of the road. Bone grafting can rebuild the area, and other techniques can make treatment possible in cases where the available bone is not ideal. We will always be upfront with you about what the options are.
Scanning and Imaging
We use CBCT scanning at Harwood Dental Care. CBCT stands for cone beam computed tomography, and it produces a three-dimensional image of your jaw rather than a flat two-dimensional X-ray. This lets us see the precise dimensions and density of the bone, the position of nearby nerves, and the detailed anatomy of the area we are working with.
The scan takes a few minutes and is comfortable. It is an important part of safe, accurate implant planning, and it means we can work from detailed information rather than estimates.
Will I Need a Scan at My First Appointment?
In most cases, yes. The scan is what allows us to plan the exact position and depth of the implant before we begin. We may review any recent dental imaging you have from elsewhere, but we will usually want our own scan for implant planning purposes.
Your Medical History and Medications
We will ask about your general health and anything you take regularly. Some health conditions and medications can affect how well you heal after implant placement. This rarely rules implants out completely, but it does affect how we plan your treatment. Conditions such as well-managed diabetes, osteoporosis, and certain heart conditions are things we discuss openly, sometimes with involvement from your GP.
Smoking is also relevant. It reduces implant success rates and slows healing. If you smoke, it is worth being honest about it so we can factor it in and have a realistic conversation about your options.
What if I Have Been Told Elsewhere That I Do Not Have Enough Bone for Dental Implants?
Come and see us. The answer depends on the specific assessment, and techniques have improved considerably. Bone grafting can rebuild areas that have lost volume, and in some situations angled implants or other approaches can work with the bone that is available. It is worth getting a current assessment rather than relying on advice from some time ago.
Dental Implants Treatment Plan and Costs
At the end of your consultation, we will talk you through what treatment would involve in your particular case, how many appointments it would take, and what the full cost would be. We do not rush this part of the appointment.
Dental implants at Harwood Dental Care start from £3,000. Finance options are available if spreading the cost over time is helpful, and our team can explain what is available.
There is no obligation to proceed after a consultation. Our job is to give you the full picture and let you make a decision you are comfortable with in your own time.
How long does the consultation take?
Allow around 45 to 60 minutes. This covers the examination, the scan, a discussion of your options, and time for any questions you have. Come with questions written down if that helps.
